Water Baby EntertainmentMar 31, 20227 min readNew Dyson Purifying Headphones in 2022!Dyson's New Air Purifying HeadphonesFrom Dyson's Youtube video:When you're at home, you're in a protected space. As soon as you go out of your house, you're faced with all these different pollutants.Dust, gases, VOCs, pollen.Noise pollution is also a really big issue.Noise of jets, of construction sites. How do you protect someone when they are commuting to work or going out?The idea of this machine was to overcome that problem.Clean air, quality sound on the move.Air purification inside a set of headphones. We've got two compressors that sit in the ear cups. These compressors spin, which draws in air. This filter removes particulate and gases from the air. That purified air passes down through our visor at the front here. The clean air is travelling round and then exits through this mesh. And that provides the user with a zone, a bubble of clean air, from which to breathe. There's a great mix of things that Dyson have already tackled, filtration, acoustics and airflow. It's just about putting them in a smaller package that is wearable. It's been a real journey of pushing the limits of what is possible.Over five years of development, engineers' time and relentless testing, including hundreds of prototypes. We're really trying to drive the development into something that we're really proud of.A really excellent machine.CNETsoon you can have a dyson air filter foryour face that also plays music breathein and jam out the dyson zone airpurifying headphones are real and comingthis year let's go over how it works[Music]so dyson has made a whole new kind ofwearable one that delivers pure air toyour nose and mouth and it delivers puresound with noise cancelling highhigh-fidelity over-ear headphonesand it also would look awesome for yourmortal kombat or bane cosplay just a funbonus feature if you're into that okayit's because we are not used to thisidea of wearing portable air purifiersbutthis is a product that dyson is seriousabout the company has been working onthis for six years more than 500prototypes have been designed to get itright there's even a patent applicationfrom back in 2018 so take a second andjust process this you have dyson amassive company that is looking at howpollution and air quality are becoming agrowing problem and their team said yeahwe're going to invest years and years oflabor in making this product becausepeople will want to pay for a way tobreathe better outsideso yeah that's not the bright future welike to think about because we'll needbreathing technology nowi'll just try to cheer you up by tellingyou about all the cool tech insidedyson has been in the air filter gamefor a while now filtering both gases andparticles from the air now theengineering challenge was how to getthis same filtration tech in a smallerform the compressors are in the ear cupsthe air goes in through filters on theear cups and then with the visor it'sprojecting two streams of clean air tothe nose and mouth they had a lot ofdifferent ideas on how to get thatstream of air to your face someprototypes are shown with snorkellooking attachments but this visordoesn't touch your face at all it snapsto the headphones with magnets it justkind of hovers in front of your nose andmouth and you can adjust the size to fityour face and you can just listen tomusic without the visor on but you needthe visor to get the air filtrationthere are three different air speeds forthe filter and what i think is neat isthat there's this auto mode so if you'rejust walking around it's in a lowsetting but if you start runningupstairs it's going to kick up to blowthe air hardernow this was tested in crosswinds so ifit's a breezy day it shouldn't be aproblem and i'm told by dyson that youcan take a phone call while the airfiltration is on soit's not gonna be noisy enough that itmesses with the phone microphone butlet's say you're walking around townwearing it you're looking like a bionicfuture hero and you want to stop in acafe and order a coffee i'm told all youhave to do is pull down the visor towardthe chin and when it lowers thefiltration and the music willautomatically pause so you can have aconversation with other humansand then go back to your bionic worldsomething like that we should go overthe headphones as well now the companyput a lot of engineering into the fit ofthe headphones they say it distributesthe weight over the sides of the headinstead of right at the top the paddingover the ear creates a natural seal it'salready going to block sound out thatway but it has active noise cancelingtechnology which means it's working tocancel out the sound wavelengths aroundyou and there are three modes isolationmode is on the high end it's cancellingout the outside sound conversation modehappens when you lower that visor andyou need to chat with someone it'llamplify the conversation so it's notsounding muffled with headphones on andthen there's transparency mode andthat's for when you want to hear somebackground sound around you now thisproduct is targeted around solvingpollution problems and the need forclean air but of coursewe're all thinking about the covidthe visor itself is not a mask so in thebox dyson is including a cloth maskinsert it's been explained to me thatthis touches your cheeks it goes overyour nose and it fits right into thevisor for when you need to wearsomething that covers you more now thefiltration technology dyson is using iscalled electrostatic filtration dysonsays it captures 99of particle pollution and that includesdust pollen bacteria and some virusesanything that is as small as 0.1microns and well the kovid virus is justabout that size at .125 microns this isnot a medical device it's not designedfor this i mean dyson can't claim it'sgoing to suck away all the covert foryou of coursebut clearly there are some elements ofthis that can align well with thepossibility that you'll need to wear amask a face covering in the futurebecause of covet and you might want somefresh air at the same time i know i wasthinking about it now you may not beused to seeing folks wearing airpurifying masks around town whilecommuting to work to combat smoke anddust but this could be more common soona few companies have been releasingdifferent masking solutions for the pastfew years back in early 2020 there wasthe eo air it unveiled at ces it wastouted as something helpful for thoseworking in wildfire cleanup and there'salso the razer zephyr this is anotherproduct we've seen recently at ces itforms a seal around the nose and themouth and has replaceable air filtersand a transparent design to see themouth when someone's talking and there'sthe super mask it combines a helper fanfiltration with attachable noisecanceling earbuds that one sells forabout 300we don't know yet how much the dysonzone is going to cost all we know isthat it'll be coming out sometime laterin the year in the fall and we will besure to tell you all about it when wecan try it on ourselves in the meantimelet me know all the questions you haveabout this and if you think it'ssomething that you'll see in your futureuntil thenbreathe easy my friendsEn gadgetDyson just unveiled its first wearableproduct andit's not what you think it isthe device is called the Dyson zone andit's a set of noise canceling airpurifying headphonesit comes with a detachable visor for thebottom half of the wearer's face thatlooks to put it mildlyoddthat visor actually blows filtered airto your nose mouth and chin sort of likea portable fan dedicated to the lowerportion of your face Dyson integrated asmaller version of its air filtrationsystem into the ear cups and the idea isthat people can protect themselves frompollution while out and aboutthe zone might seem like a response tothe pandemic but Dyson says this devicehas actually been six years in themaking it's not born so much from adesire to keep out covet 19 germs per sebut more as a way for people to breatheless polluted air wherever they go thezone is not only a wearable airfiltration system but it's also thecompany's first audio product in factdyson describes it as headphonesdelivering pure air and pure sound ifyou're thinking this thing looks absurdyou're not alone my first reaction toseeing this thing was complete and utteramusement so when dyson offered to showme the contraption in person i just knewi had to see and try this thing out formyselfsadly though the company didn't allow usto take any photos or videos so i'll domy best to describe the experience mybiggest takeaway after spending sometime with a prototype is that yes itlooks just as ridiculous in real lifeand yetdespite its looks god i still want onetyson said it engineered the headset tofit comfortably and distribute weightevenly by drawing inspiration from horsesaddles there are three cushions on theheadband and the central one is slightlycurved like a saddle to distribute theload through contact areas when i put onthe zone and adjusted his arms to fit myhead the whole thing felt balanced andit didn't feel heavy the ear cupsthemselves were spongy and soft and oncethey had clamped on there was animmediately noticeable muffling effectthat's because the demo unit had alreadybeen set to one of the three anc modesavailable isolation conversation andtransparency the highlight of my timewith the zone though has got to be whenthey snap that magnetic visor on oncethe mask was connected the motors andthe ear cups were to life and a gentleclean smelling trickle of air startedblowing at my lips and noseit was surprisingly comfortable and foran obsessive clean freak like me it feltborderline magicalthis could not only be the personal airbubble i've dreamed of but also might bea portable air conditioner for the lowerhalf of my face which would be ablessing in the summer the visor wasalso designed to defuse two jets ofairflow and at no point during my timewith the dyson zone did i feel like iwas being overwhelmed or pummeled bywindthe ear cups compressors draw airthrough dual layer filters includingnegatively charged electrostatic filtersto catch particles like allergens anddust a potassium-enriched carbon layercaptures gas pollutants like nitrogendioxide sulfur dioxide and ozone earlierversions of the zone took the form of asnorkel-like mouthpiece connected to abackpack like oxygen tanks in a scubadiving setup 500 prototypes later thecompany settled on the headset and visorcombination and the mouthpiece candeliver clean air without touching thewearer's face the company also made acompanion app that would show the airquality of the region you're in althoughat the time of the meeting it didn'tshow data that was more locationspecific than the city you're in youcouldn't for instance see if your placeof work had more polluted air than thepark you walked to for lunch for examplethe company hasn't shared pricing andavailability information for the zonejust yet other than to say it's comingthis year i can already see this being agreat device to wear for my futuretravels whether it be on an airplane orin a commuter train and at the demo ieven went to lay down on a couch withthe zone on just to see how comfortableit would be to wear this on say ared-eye flight it felt surprisinglycomfortable for the admittedly briefperiod of time i was laying down but ofcourse there are still things i'd needto know before spending money on thezone like battery life and real worldperformancehopefully dyson will share moreinformation on those things soon
